Christmas Sunday School Activities

The King is Coming,
so you have better get ready

This is a 3 week Christmas Sunday School program for children of approximately the ages 6-14yrs.
The aim is to discover the prophecy behind the Christmas story.

The Stories

The stories are told from the perspective of a school boy called Darren. On discovering an old story he becomes fascinated about Zion's King. There are three stories telling of how the prophets of old told the people about the coming king, the discovery by some men from the east that a new king is to be born and the reaction of the Herod when he heard this news.

The Chair

As an opportunity to get more people involved in the work of the Sunday school we invited three people to come in read a part of the story. We often chose older people who are not normally associated with children's work so that the children heard the story as if coming from their gran or granddad. To show the importance of the story we constructed a special story tellers chair. This was an idea gained from the Art Attack website (which has many good craft ideas). Look at the project called the Fantasy Throne. The chair was an ordinary upright stacking arm chair, like those often used in church meeting rooms. Two sides were created from MDF board which could then be attached to the chair and painted to look like a throne. The chair then had some extra cloths placed on it to make it look more like a throne. A special place was given to the story tellers chair in the room so that all of the children could see. Behind the chair on the wall was a poster that announced "The King is Coming".

The Rap

A rap has also been composed with the intention that it is said each week with an extra verse that tells the next stage of the story. By the end of the three weeks the children would have said it enough times to be able to perform it during the church service.

Craft Activities

We spent most of our craft time making a banner which we then displayed whilst we performed the rap in the nearest Sunday service to Christmas.
The banner was designed and then templates made. The cloth was cut to the templates and the pieces glued to the back cloth. Rich colours were chosen to give a royal feel. Any child able to use scissors could take part and there is also a lot of gluing to do, although this had to be carefully supervised. Good scissors are required for cutting cloth.
