Children's Talks

• Animal Puppets. You can have just about any animal puppet and introduce them as the very sheep that got lost and had Jesus search for them. Or in the case of the example service sheet the puppet used on this occassion was a chicken, who was a distant relative of the cockerel that crowed and reminded Peter what Jesus had said to him. This then enabled me to tell the story of Peter in the courtyard from the eyes of the cockerel. An added bonus for this particular puppet was that it crowed. The puppets do not have to be of the type that professional puppeteers use, but simply children's glove puppets, so long as you can get your hand in them you are away. I also have a badger that was there when the disciples fell asleep in the garden as Jesus prayed and a squirrel who was up the tree with Zacchaeus when Jesus said that he would have a meal at his house. I am sure you get the idea. It is worth safeguarding the puppets as they are much sought after by the children once the service is finished and this is a time for further conversations.

• Dog Food. For a lesson on how God looks at what is on the inside not on the outside. Choose a tin of food that you can eat cold (you may need a strong stomach for this) Remove the label and replace it with a label for a tin of dog or cat food. You begin your talk by explaining that you were late coming out to church and would the children mind if you could take a moment to eat breakfast. Open the tin using a tin opener and treat yourself to the contents. As you eat begin to explain how God is more concerned with what is going on in our hearts than what we look like from the outside. You will have to help the children to focus on what you are saying as by this time they would have noticed that you appear to be eating dog food. Do not spend too long on the point as children will quickly pick it up, then ask some of them if they would like to share your breakfast. No is the normal response, although there is often one person willing to have a go. When they have all refused to eat ask why. They of course will tell you that it is because it is dog food. At this point you can explain to them that it is in fact not dog food and that the label is the wrong one and that is why God looks on the inside and does not go by what people are called or call themselves.
